La Fossa dei Leoni, il gruppo ultras della Fortitudo, sugli spalti del PalaDozza dal 1970. Cinquant'anni di coreografie sulle scalinate, la fanzine, la radio, le trasferte, le riunioni dove tutti hanno voce — e i matrimoni dei soci celebrati insieme. Un'appartenenza che diventa fede: da lì il titolo.

Negli anni '90, le due squadre di pallacanestro bolognesi, Fortitudo e Virtus, consacrano Bologna a capitale del basket. Non solo l'Italia ma addirittura l'Europa acclama Bologna come la Basket City. Non sono però solo i giocatori a rafforzare questa immagine: a coinvolgere un ampio pubblico di sostenitori contribuisce la tifoseria senza eguali di uno dei gruppi ultras più longevi della storia italiana.
Campionessa indiscussa nel numero di vittorie, la Virtus non può vantare gli stessi record nella tifoseria. Più contenuta nei successi sul campo, la Fortitudo ha per anni estratto dal cuore e dall'anima dei suoi sostenitori gli ingredienti per sentirsi invincibile a prescindere dal punteggio. A dimostrare che la vera forza non si fonda su un buon rendimento stagionale, quanto sui legami che evoca il senso di una reciproca appartenenza.
La Fossa dei Leoni, con più di mezzo secolo di storia alle spalle, guida il destino della Fortitudo bianco-blu dagli spalti del PalaDozza dal 1970. Spirito di condivisione, fede ed entusiasmo sono le caratteristiche della piccola comunità che gli ultras animano per sostenere i loro idoli. Le coreografie storiche sulle scalinate del palazzetto sono diventate un affresco iconico per i passaggi dei giocatori. I tatuaggi, il brand di vestiti, il ritmo tribale nelle trasferte hanno dato alla squadra la forza di lottare e ai membri un simbolo in cui riconoscersi.
Da più di cinquant'anni la Fossa, legata inizialmente dal sostegno alla squadra, si è rafforzata grazie a un senso più ampio di solidarietà, esteso dai membri del tifo alla comunità locale. Ogni cambiamento nella vita dei soci, come un matrimonio, assume un significato importante e viene celebrato collettivamente.
Legati da valori condivisi, le voci della Fossa hanno creato una propria ritualità. Sostenere la propria bandiera, difendendo un ideale, si è tramutato in un atto di fede che si manifesta nei pellegrinaggi durante le trasferte. Valorizzando l'inclusività, la Fossa istituisce ogni giorno una democrazia orizzontale, con riunioni in cui tutti possono esprimersi e in cui il genere dei membri è relativo. La fanzine e il programma radiofonico sono i canali attraverso cui viene rafforzato il senso di appartenenza.
Il senso di coesione e di supporto per la squadra viene istituzionalizzato dal basso attraverso una simbologia pervasiva, e l'organizzazione sociale e affettiva della Fossa trova risposta nei numerosi spazi liturgici che fanno dello sport una fede. FAITH è il nome di questo progetto; FAITH è ciò che si scorge attraverso gli scatti dell'autore; FAITH è ciò che lega la Fossa dei Leoni da più di mezzo secolo.
Since the beginning of the last century Bologna has had a deep connection with basketball. In the 1990s it became the sport's epicentre, hailed as the Basket City not only in Italy but throughout Europe. Engaging a wide audience of supporters is the unparalleled fan base of one of the longest-running ultras groups in Italian history, La Fossa dei Leoni.
Undisputed champion in the number of victories, Virtus cannot claim the same records among its supporters. More restrained in results on court, Fortitudo has for years drawn from the heart of its supporters the ingredients to feel invincible whatever the score — proof that real strength rests less on a good season than on the bonds evoked by a sense of mutual belonging.
The Fossa dei Leoni, with more than half a century of history behind them, has been guiding Fortitudo's destiny from the stands of the PalaDozza since 1970. A spirit of sharing, faith and enthusiasm are the characteristics of the small community that the ultras animate to support their idols. The historic choreographies on the arena steps have become an iconic fresco for the players walking past. The tattoos, the clothing brand, the tribal rhythm on away days gave the team the strength to fight and the members a symbol to recognise themselves in.
For more than fifty years the Fossa, originally linked to team support, has grown through a broader sense of solidarity, extended by its members to the local community. Every change in members' lives, like a wedding, takes on significance and is celebrated collectively.
Bound by shared values, the voices of la Fossa have created their own rituals. Raising one's flag, defending an ideal, turned into an act of faith manifested in pilgrimages during away games. Valuing inclusivity, the Fossa establishes a horizontal democracy every day, through meetings where everyone can express themselves and where the gender of members is not important. The fanzine and the radio programme are the channels through which the sense of belonging is strengthened.
The sense of cohesion and support for the team is institutionalised from grass roots through a pervasive symbolism, and the social and affective organisation of the Fossa finds its answer in the many liturgical spaces that turn sport into a faith. FAITH is the name of this project; FAITH is what is perceived through the author's shots; FAITH is what has bound the Fossa dei Leoni for more than half a century.
